From Mokwugwo Solomon, Awka

An astute politician, Hon. Azuka Okwuosa, has emerged flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the August 16 senatorial by-election in the Anambra South.

Okwuosa defeated his lone rival, Dr. Obinna Uzor 470 against 57 to secure the ticket contested on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at the popular Anaedo Hall, Nnewi, Anambra state.

The Anambra South senatorial by-election is being organized to replace late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who died exactly one year ago in London.

Declaring the results, chairman of the primary election committee, Chief Ikoh, revealed that a total of 594 delegates from seven local government areas of the zone participated in the election, with 22 votes declared invalid.

“By the authority given to me by the acting national vice chairman of APC, I confirm that election was held before INEC, security agents, the media and delegates. The exercise was peaceful and I, hereby, declare that Azuka Okwuosa won the election and hereby returned.”

In his acceptance speech, Okwuosa said he was happy to have been elected as the party’s flagbearer. He called on his opponent, Obinna Uzor, not to see the outcome of the election as a defeat to him, but as a call to unite with him to ensure that the party retains the seat previously occupied by Senator Ubah.

He equally thanked the party members, delegates, and others who made the exercise successful, and promised to make the party proud come August 16, 2025.

In an exclusive chat with Legit.ng correspondent, Okwuosa noted that his victory came with mixed emotions due to the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

In an exclusive chat with Legit.ng correspondent, Okwuosa noted that his victory came with mixed emotions due to the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

According to him, “Late Senator Ubah was a great man, and within the period he was in the senate, he did a lot and, I see it as a challenge for me to take over from where he stopped.

“He left a shoe that I will find hard to step into, but by the grace of God, and working together with like minds, we shall get there, and we shall make the difference.”

He told his party members to work hard with him by mobilizing support for the party, so that the vacant seat left by Senator Ubah, an APC Senator, will not be won by another political party.

Also in an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, chairman of APC in Anambra state, Chief Basil Ejidike, described Okwuosa’s victory as victory for APC, and a promise of victory come August 16.

He said, “What happened today is an in-house exercise. There is nothing like winner or loser. We have bigger battle on August 16, and it is going to be a battle we must win as a united political party. That is when the real winner will emerge.”

Chief Ejidike further called upon party members to rally behind the party’s candidate. He emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among members to effectively mobilize grassroots support in preparation for the upcoming election on August 16, 2025.

He highlighted the need for a cohesive strategy to secure a victory for the APC and strengthen its presence in Anambra state. He equally urged all stakeholders to engage actively in campaign efforts and connect with the grassroots to ensure the party’s success come August 16.

Azuka Okwuosa is a former chairman of old Nnewi local government area, a former Commissioner for Works and Transport in Anambra state, and a former Secretary of the South-East Development Initiative.
