World Earth Day Celebration: Anambra, Erosion Capital of Africa -Environment Commissioner

The Commissioner for Environment Anambra State, Engr Dr Felix Odumegwu, has described Anambra State as the erosion capital of Africa, even as he announced that there are over 1,000 active erosion sites in the state.
The Environment Commissioner who disclosed this at his office in Awka during a press briefing in preparation for this year’s World Earth Day Celebration billed to hold on Saturday, 22nd April 2023 at Prof Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, Awka said that the ministry and environmental experts would used the opportunity to speak to Ndi on how best to tackle the erosion menace devastating the state as well as inculcate in them the culture of tree planting.
The Theme of the Town Hall according to the Commissioner, is “Taking Ownership: A Community Participation Approach”
Engr. Odimegwu who paid a glowing tribute to Governor Chukwuma Soludo said that the State’s number one citizen, was the person that initiated the drive for a Clean, Green, and Sustainable environment.
Hon Odimegwu who stressed the importance of having trees around one’s vicinity stated that trees give out oxygen human beings needed to stay alive and received carbon dioxide from human beings, saying that it was the duty of the ministry to ensure clean and green environment, adding that everyone needed clean environment, clear air and greener environment.
The Commissioner said that the essence of tomorrow’s Town Hall would be to interfaced with Ndi Anambra and brainstormed on how to get lasting solutions to the erosion menace ravaging the state.
He said that every participant would go home with tree seedlings, saying that every household should at least plant a tree in their domain .
