Rivers State members of the People’s Democratic Party PDP had earlier embarked on peaceful protest to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Headquarters in Port Harcourt
The party members among the litany of their requests were demanding for joint inspection of election materials and documents, as well as the release of certified true copies of 2023 governorship election results to them by INEC.
It took the intervention of the state Joint Security task force to douse the tension.
Meanwhile, members of the All Progressive Congress APC too staged another protest, later met and clashed with the PDP protesters at the INEC headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Violence erupted as crowd of PDP supporters barring the APC Governorship candidate, Tonye Cole and his party men from accessing the INEC office along the Port Harcourt Aba Expressway.
Both parties are seeking to gain an upper hand in the governorship election pettition tribunal.
It would be recalled that the INEC declared candidates of the PDP winner in the March 18 Rivers State Governorship and House of Assembly election.
PDP won the three senatorial seats, 22 out of 24 Houses of assembly seats, while APC won One and supplementary election will be conducted to decide the 24th seat on 15th of April 2023
